243150 - Learn Through Play Golf

This program is the result and "new fruit" of "golf seeds" planted through the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission's own Winter Youth Golf Tour. The program as been in the community for twenty-four years, and it is the most popular and preferred format with long term retention determined through years of observation and formal surveys of young players new to golf. Players with parents, grandparents and friends can embark on a golf learning journey together. Learning on the actual playing field inspires deep learning and passionate roots. The GBGA "Challenger" is a developmental course designed for the development of golf skills through playing golf.

Our brand new educational initiative, "SIMPLIFY GOLF LEARN THROUGH PLAY" (SGLTP) program provides new golfers ages 4 to 7 the opportunity to develop cognitive and motor golf skills while having fun together.

Our six week format has two weeks of incliment weather options built in so there are 8 weeks allotted for this season. Our GBGA challenger developmental course is an age and skill level appropriate design complete with exercises and games that parallel developmental stages. The formats also include a valuable time component that compliments the age and stage skill levels that are proving to be highly effective. These formats are old to other sports or activities but brand new to golf! These exercises are designed around family fun. One of our primary missions through this program is for entire families to spend more time together outdoors enjoying nature, while engaging in low impact exercise in a sport that has important life values embedded in its game.

    SGLTP GOALS:
    1. Introduction of a new fun golf learning format on the actual field of play! Having FUN learning the fundamentals!

    2. Support learning by engaging the parents and families into the learning process. (Parents play a similar role in golf to the roles parents play in coaches pitch baseball)

    3. Learning the basic skills by performing them in a true golf environment using a proven developmental method equivalent to the "baby walking developmental theory”. This means the game will be learned starting with the smallest strokes, then graduating to larger swings as the support system strengthens and matures.

    4. Measuring skill improvement and progress though a brand new score index system that is the first combined age/skill level calibrated system of measure in golf that positively influences both cognitive and motor skill development.

Join us for a matinee of "Ain't Misbehavin'" at the Newberry Opera House. The joint is jumpin' from start to finish with Fats Waller classics like "Honeysuckle Rose", "Squeeze Me", "Your Feet Too Big", and "That Ain't Right." This fast-paced romp takes you to Harlem in the 30's where the high-steppers partied, from honkey tonk dives to the Cotton Club, from Tin Pan Alley to the Waldorf. "Ain't Misbehavin'" evokes a whole scene of jazz worlds - uptown and downtown, raffish and posh, funny and startlingly beautiful. Before the show, enjoy a Dutch treat lunch at The Cabana Cafe. Open Registration: October 1, 2011 - January 15, 2012.

Interact with hands-on exhibits in the Visitor Center, talk to knowledgeable staff members, and take an audio tour on the self-guided history trail.
