231200 - Lora Rust Pottery Workshop
This hands on pottery workshop, taught by Lora Rust, will focus on surface texture and pottery decoration. Participants in this 2-day class will learn Lora’s unique texturing technique for decorating clay. Each participant should bring 3-4 cups or bowls that are on the softer side of “leather hard”, a water bucket, a piece of egg crate foam, sponge, and optional banding wheel. Participants will learn and practice her technique on sample tiles; they will then be able to work under her direction and supervision using these surface techniques on their own pieces.
Class will meet from 8:00-5:00 on Saturday, and 10:00-4:00 on Sunday.
Lora Rust, pottery instructor at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, will be holding a workshop at Crooked Creek Recreation Center in Chapin, SC (near Columbia). Her work is primarily functional porcelain tableware and serveware that is thrown on the wheel then altered and lavishly textured. For our purposes participants will have 3-4 hand built or thrown pieces trimmed and ready in soft leather-hard stage for class.
Lora will be demonstrating how she alters her pieces with lush patterns and designs using a unique decorating technique. The surface of the pieces is enhanced with a process of striking and moving the soft leather hard clay with handmade wooden tools. No clay is added, removed or carved away. Please see her website at www.LoraRust.com, or Facebook Lora Rust Ceramics and Instagram @LoraRust for examples of her exquisite work.
Using Lora's signature tools you will learn and practice her technique on sample tiles. You will then be able to work under her direction and supervision using these surface techniques on your own pieces. She will have her special tools available for purchase.
Workshop Cost - $125 (Lunch is available for $10 per day)

Hello Fellow Potters!
Hard to believe the workshop is just around the corner! I just spoke with Lora and she has asked me to forward some information to you. Also, please check out the schedule which I have attached below. You may want to print it out.
Please bring 3 to 4 cups or bowls that are at the softer side of leather hard. They can be either hand built or thrown. It makes no difference. It's important that with the techniques she is demonstrating that you be able to push/move the clay. (We’ll check them for the right consistency at the beginning of the workshop and make any adjustments we need, but aim for trimmed but still on the soft side of leather hard). Pieces can be in stoneware or porcelain. Clays with less grog (like porcelain or Little Loafers) are often easier to sponge
Make sure you are able to put your hand inside these pieces for support as you are pushing against the surface.
She asks that you not be invested in these pieces. In other words, get ready to experiment and play! We will experiment and practice the technique on 3x3 tiles before tackling your own pieces.
Lora will be bringing her special tools for sale (set of 3 tools with 2 profiles each for $15), but please bring your basic clay tools that you use. You may be able to use some of them for surface designs after she shows you how she uses her tools.
Other supplies to bring: water bucket, piece of egg crate foam or similar (10-12” square is ample), sponge, banding wheel (optional)

328371 - Newberry Opera House
Join us for a matinee of "Ain't Misbehavin'" at the Newberry Opera House. The joint is jumpin' from start to finish with Fats Waller classics like "Honeysuckle Rose", "Squeeze Me", "Your Feet Too Big", and "That Ain't Right." This fast-paced romp takes you to Harlem in the 30's where the high-steppers partied, from honkey tonk dives to the Cotton Club, from Tin Pan Alley to the Waldorf. "Ain't Misbehavin'" evokes a whole scene of jazz worlds - uptown and downtown, raffish and posh, funny and startlingly beautiful. Before the show, enjoy a Dutch treat lunch at The Cabana Cafe. Open Registration: October 1, 2011 - January 15, 2012.
